History Of The New York Knicks

Marilia Vieira
The New York Knicks are a professional basketball team playing in the National Basketball Association. The team has been in existence since 1946.

In 1946 the team began play in the Basketball Association of America. The team was one of the original teams in the league. The league eventually merged with the National Basketball League to start the National Basketball Association.

The Knicks have been one of America’s favorite teams for almost the entire existence of the team. New York is the biggest market available in the United States and the team draws a lot of money and attention regardless of the amount of success that the team achieves. The team has been in the dumps for years now, but they were once a successful, powerful team.

The late 60’s and early 70’s treated the New York Knicks very well. The team was led by star player Walt “Clyde” Frazier and coached by Red Holzman. The team had just been on a streak of not making the playoffs for the better part of 10 years when things were revived in 1968.

The team went on to become a solid contender for the championship each year for nearly a decade. The team really started to hit its stride in 1970. In 1970 the team put together a record 18 straight victories(the record is not still intact) and won 60 games. Those 60 wins represent the highest total of wins that the team has had in team history to this day.

As the playoffs came the team began to march through their Eastern Conference opponents. The team beat the Bullets and Bucks before facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the title.

The Lakers and Knicks started out the series tied 2-2. Game 5 would be crucial in deciding the outcome of the series. Unfortunately for the Knicks, Willis Reed was injured and could not play the rest of the game. Despite the loss of Reed the team went on to take a come from behind victory in game 5. The team could not close out the series in game 6 without Reed and the series would be stretched to the limit of 7 games. The 7th game held one of the classic moments in NBA history. Willis Reed had been injured and was not expected to play. Against all odds Reed came limping to the sideline and onto the court, ready to play in the game. He did not play one of his best games, but did score the first 2 buckets of the game. That was inspiring enough to get the team motivated to take the championship in 1970.

That victory marked the first NBA Championship for the New York Knicks. In 1973 the team was able to bring home another NBA Championship to New York. This was the capstone of the run that the Knicks made in the 70’s. These two championships would help the team be remembered as one of the greatest teams in the early 70s.

The Knicks have never been the same since those glory days. They have managed to make NBA Finals and to win games in the playoffs, but they have not been able to bring home a championship for nearly 40 years.

Dallas Cowboy New Stadium

Geoffrey Wooldridge
Dallas Cowboys stadium is the largest domed venue of its kind in the world. Built in Arlington Texas, Dallas Cowboys stadium was designed to replace the former stadium used by the Cowboys since the early days of the team. Intended to house the new NFL season for the team, the Dallas Cowboys stadium had the official opening on May 29th, 2009. The architectural elements present in the former building are imitated in the appearance of the new venue as a form of homage or tribute paid to the team's history. The new Dallas Cowboys stadium serves for non-sports events too, such as concerts, shows and other cultural manifestations.

The Dallas Cowboys Stadium was built for impressive sums of money. Lots of taxes were in fact increased in Arlington as a form of financial support for the construction. Car rental, hotel occupancy and city's sales taxes were increased with one or two percents for the only purpose of funding the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The National Football League also had a share in the contribution according to the policy that allows financing team stadiums. Lots of nicknames have been given by fans to the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium but most of them are very little known.

As for design and architecture, it seems that the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium is beyond any criticism. Massive arches anchor the stadium at each end, the retractable roof makes events possible no matter the weather and the glass doors allow easy access at each end zone. There is a high-definition video display hung right in the middle of the stadium which enables for a nearly perfect visibility. Even the new scoreboard is highly larger. With 3,000 square feet bigger than the former scoreboard, Dallas Cowboys Stadium scoreboard now measures 11,520 square feet.

The Dallas Cowboys Stadium also includes a Hall of Fame level dedicated to the best American football team. Even if you are not a Cowboys' fan you'll still be impressed by the huge number of real life drawings and the quality of the design.

The 2011 Super Bowl will be housed by this facility, but until then, the Dallas Cowboys Stadium is expected to be used on very numerous occasions, for a wide range of activities. From cultural shows to the music concerts and exhibitions, the new Arlington venue has a lot of things to offer.

Browns Keeping Starting QB Under Wraps

Ross Everett
Most NFL head coaches place a priority on naming a starting QB before the regular season begins. The idea is that it helps the chemistry on the team, as well as helping the quarterback define himself as a team leader. Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini hasn't named his starting QB yet. Nor will he, at least not publicly. Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson will find out if they're the starting QB in the next couple of days, but the coach won't divulge that information to the public until game day.

Mangini stressed that he'd already made his choice, and that hell meet with both Quinn and Anderson individually to inform them of his decision:

"In terms of announcing it publicly, that's not something I plan to do. It will be internal. I understand everybody has a different opinion on it. I respect that. I understand the excitement in relationship to that and I respect that as well. But that will be something that will be internal."

As of Sunday, both quarterbacks were still in the dark and not saying much. Derek Anderson said he didn't have a clue:

"I know as much as you guys know.

While Quinn suggested that it wasn't a big concern for him:

"I'm not worried about it. You guys are more worried about it than I am."

Mangini may be trying to gain a strategic advantage over the Browns opponents in the opening week of the NFL regular season:

"It is more difficult to plan for two quarterbacks than it is to plan for one. I'm not saying that's going to be the difference or not the difference, but I know that there is time allotted to that and you can't put the same amount of time into focusing on one player."

Vikings coach Brad Childress said that it really didn't make a difference in how he'd approach his preparation for the contest:

"Just schematically, you're going to go back and look at tape and see what you've seen. And then I know, as do our guys, that there will be unscouted looks. They certainly haven't showed their whole hand, offensively and defensively. So you're just going back and looking at formation-wise where they're putting people and what kind of players they are. It will be more about us deploying to what they do."

The Browns coach concluded his comments by emphasizing that regardless of who is eventually named the starting QB that he's happy with the play of both:

"I have been happy with the progress that both guys made. I'm happy with the way they've worked. I'm happy with the way they approached this competition, and it's not always easy to approach a competition in a team fashion, and I respect the way they've handled it."

After hosting the Vikings in their opening game of the 2009 NFL regular season, Cleveland will play their next two games on the road. They'll head to Denver for a game against the Broncos on September 20th and then play another away game in week 3, taking on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, September 27.

Raiders Rip Cowboys In NFL Preseason Action

Ross Everett
The Dallas Cowboys received a solid effort from QB Tony Romo in his first action of the NFL preseason, but ultimately went down in defeat to the host Oakland Raiders by a 31-10 final score. Romo went three and out in his first series, but orchestrated a nice drive on his second go-round culminating in an eight yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten.

Romo did receive some criticism for hooking up with his longtime favorite target Witten rather than involve the rest of the offense. There's been a lot of concern about the need to develop more long yardage passing threats after the departure of Terrell Owens. After the game, he brushed aside this talk:

"I don't think it means anything. If one guy caught six straight balls and then we scored, that's fine, too. It's just about whatever the defense allows us on that specific play."

Receiver Roy Williams caught one pass on the evening, and gave his vote of confidence on the Cowboys offense:

"If we execute like that, any team is going to have trouble. But we're going to have our adversity and have our hard times where we can't get open or the quarterback gets sacked or a bad throw. But tonight it all fell into place."

Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell didn't do much in only two series of action, but Oakland coach Bruce Cable still gave him props for a good effort:

"I thought he was very aggressive with the ball, made good decisions. That's what I'm talking about with him. When he plays the game at a fast enough speed, it allows him to be on time and he showed that tonight."

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips chalked the loss up to a learning experience:

"Our second group and our young guys, they made a lot of mistakes. You could see them out there. Those things shouldn't happen but they did. Our guys will learn from those things."

The Cowboys will continue their NFL preseason play hosting the Tennessee Titans on Friday night. Oakland, meanwhile travel across the bay to play their local rivals the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.

CFL Best Alouettes Rough Up Blue Bombers

Ross Everett
The Montreal Alouettes demonstrated the form that has made them the CFLs top team in a Saturday visit to Winnipeg. Anthony Calvillo threw four touchdown passes and the tenacious Montreal defense all but shut down the Winnipeg offense as the Alouettes prevailed easily over the Blue Bombers by a 39-12 score.

CFL bettors who backed Montreal cashed their tickets as the Als easily covered as -8 road favorites. Montreal improved to 5-2 against the number while the Blue Bombers slipped to 4-3 against the spread. Interestingly, this was the first time all season that Winnipeg failed to cover as an underdog, having earned the money in four such roles this season before tonights setback.

Calvillo not only through four TD passes, he through three consecutive passes for touchdowns which is a feat that he can't recall accomplishing before:

"Somebody mentioned that to me out there. I didn't realize that and they asked me if it's ever been done or if I'd done it before and I can't recall."

After the game, Calvillo gave all of the credit for the victory to the defense and insisted that his team had a lot of work to do:

"Our defence put us on the short field throughout the night and we capitalized on the turnovers. We have a lot of work to do. We had a few dropped passes, a few misreads by myself and two turnovers. We're always looking to improve and we definitely have to improve on offence."

Kerry Watkins caught one of Calvillos touchdowns and spoke of playing with the CFL legend in his postgame interview:

"It's a great accomplishment, but something we don't keep track of. It's an honour. That's a living legend. I've been so fortunate to play my whole (six-year) career with him."

Bombers head coach Mike Kelly, who also serves as the teams offensive coordinator, chafed when asked if it was time to revamp the offense:

"There's nothing wrong with this scheme. I've seen this scheme work 1,000 times .If you want to get right down to it, we have to block when we need to block and catch when we need to catch and throw to the right people. And right now we're not doing those things so we'll continue to look at it."

Winnipeg defensive tackle Doug Brown agreed with his coachs assessment:

"Let's put it this way, we were in a good enough dogfight without as many critical errors as we made ourselves. You play a team of this calibre, the last thing you need to do is dig yourself your own hole with penalties and turnovers and missed tackles and not executing our assignments and so on and so forth."

6 Things You MUST Know Before Buying Your Next Pair Of Ice Hockey Skates

Patrick Francey
.) Rushing out to buy the top manufacturers model of skate.

Manufacturers make several models of skates to accommodate different levels of skating and the different physical sizes of skaters, as well as to cover several price points. So the 'Top Model' (read most expensice) may not be the best choice of skate to buy, for you. The higher the model of skate the more expensive it is, and, the stiffer it is. If you’re not physically heavy enough to deal with the stiffness of the skate it won’t matter how much money you pay, your skating performance will suffer. Skates that are too stiff for a skater means no knee bend. Very often it also means long-term discomfort. Be honest with yourself when it comes to your skating ability and physical size. Purchasing a model of skate that matches those two criterions, can dramatically increase your skating performance, and save you money.

2.) Fitting hockey skates like shoes.

Skates and shoes do not fit the same. A safe rule of thumb to use is that a skate will always fit a size, to a size and a half, smaller than your shoe size. Depending on how you fit your running shoes, a skate may even occasionally be as much as two sizes smaller. If your skates are currently the same size as your running shoe… they are too big. For example, if you wear a size 10 running shoe start with trying on a size 8-½ hockey skate. If you generally wear an extra wide shoe, start with a ‘D’ width skate. The ideal fit, length wise, has been achieved when you are standing in a skate that is laced up. The longest toe of the foot should, in fact, feather the end of the toecap. When you bend your knees slightly (like when you skate) the toes will pull completely away from the front of the toecap. If they don’t pull away, then go up half a size, or if you need growing room, then go up half a size.

3.) Trying on a pair of skates and not lacing them up.

This is one of the most common reasons skaters end up in skates to big. Hockey skates are, by design, meant to fit when they are laced up. As the boot is laced up, the foot will draw into the back of the skate. A skate that ultimately fits properly will, more often then not, feel small when the foot is placed in the boot prior to lacing it. Trying on a pair of skates without lacing them up is like trying on a button shirt without buttoning it… both are meant to fit when they are done up. So…when you put the skate on, be sure to give your heel a good kick into the back of the boot and then lace it up.

4.) Buying the same make and model of skate that that the pro’s (NHL) have.

This can be a tough one because the younger skaters want what their favorite player is wearing. The bottom line with this is that the skates that the general public is able to buy off the shelf are not the same as what an NHL player is wearing. The Vapor XX or CCM PRO or what ever the model might be, is not the same skate as what the general public are able to purchase. The pros are wearing custom made boots from the manufacturer. The NHL is a great marketing vehicle for the skate manufacturers and consumers need to be aware of this fact.

5.) Buying a larger a length to try and accommodate a wider foot.

If your foot is wide and the skate is tight then buy a wider skate not a bigger length. The really big skate that feels good in the store, will come back to haunt you almost every time. A skate has a very specific shape that is relative to the length of the foot going into it. If you purchase a skate that is the wrong length, nothing about the shape of the foot will line up with the boot. For example; the widest part of the foot comes back into the narrowest part of the boot. The arch of the foot no longer lines up with the arch of the skate. None of that will bother you in the store, but get out skating and it will show up.

6.) Not setting enough time aside to properly fit the skates.

It can take time to fit a skate for comfort. Wrapping a very stiff piece of material around the foot can sometimes be a challenge. How a skate fits in the first few minutes of putting it on compared to how it fits after spending some time to warm the boot up can make a dramatic difference. Give yourself at least an hour, so you can walk around the store and get a feel for the boot as well as warm it up. Also you may want to take the time to try more than one manufacturers skate and model.

Hockey Rules Made Easy

Jason Tarasi
If you're a newcomer to the game of hockey you may find the rules of the game a bit confusing, but with a little self-educating you'll pick up them right away. When you understand the hockey penalties, you'll find the game more enlightening regardless of whether you're playing or enjoying a hockey game as a spectator. The rules for hockey aren't too terribly complicated, just pretty different from other sports. Once you learn the rules, you may be ready to complain about the ref's calls like everyone does in other sports, but be careful about arguing with the referees because hockey is a pretty disciplined game. The captain of a hockey team is the one person designated to talk to officials about the rules of the game. Each team has a captain and alternate captains. The alternates can talk to the officials about a play if the captain, for one reason or another, is not on the ice.

In hockey, penalties are assessed by referees for poor behavior. Different penalties have different consequences, some resulting in a team playing short one or two players, but no more than two. When a player is taken out of the game because of a penalty, the play that occurs with the player's team being short-handed is referred to a power play for the other team and a penalty kill for the team that is penalized. There are minor penalties, major penalties, misconduct penalties and severe penalties. With severe penalties, such as trying to injure another player, a player may be suspended or fined.

With a minor penalty, the player sits out for two minutes or until the other team scores while the penalized player's team continues to play with a shortage of one player. For major penalties a player warms the bench for five minutes regardless of whether or not the other team scores. A misconduct penalty earns a player a ten minute outage, but during the time a misconduct penalty is being served by a player, the player's team doesn't have to play short-handed.

The term "offsetting" refers to a situation where both teams have players that are penalized for the same incident. The players involved in the incident have to serve their penalty time, but neither team has to play short-handed in such situations. Some specific rules of hockey clearly state what the penalty or procedure is for certain behaviors, but some are left up to the judgment of the referee who is the final authority on penalty assessments.

Choosing Hockey Sticks For Your Best Game Play

Keith Kingston
Hockey equipment is required for all players who step onto the ice but some differences exist regarding the hockey equipment utilized by different leagues. Players' hockey equipment generally consists of skates, shin pads, gloves, hockey pants, sticks, and helmets. The hockey stick tends to be the most vital, apart from your body protection.

Choosing hockey sticks that suit you best is important. If you choose the wrong sticks you could end up playing badly or even doing yourself an injury. So how do you work out which hockey sticks are right for you? Here are some helpful tips.

Firstly, when standing in your skates, your stick should reach your chin. Some defence based players prefer a longer stick to give them more reach when they're defending. If you can, buy your sticks a little long and have the shop cut them down. This is far better than having a stick that is too long or too short. Most people tend to find they have to have their stick customized to give them their optimum comfort.

You can work out what length you need by looking closely at the wear of the tape on the bottom of your stick. If the tape is worn down near the toe, then you should probably consider a longer stick. If the tape instead is worn near the heel, then you should probably consider a shorter stick. Ultimately you should try sticks at different lengths until you find one that's got a comfortable weight and feel for you.

When choosing hockey sticks you should also consider weight and blade size. Most players recommend wrapping both the stick handle and the blade with a layer of tape. This is done to assure both a tighter grip on the handle and so that the puck does not slide off of the blade as easy as normal. If you are new to the game and have yet to tape your stick then we recommend that you do this early on. As outlined above, it will help you measure your game.

Different curves will affect the way you stick handle and shoot the puck too. Again, when you're starting off and new to the game, it is a good idea to try different curves until you find one that feels comfortable. Like with all sports equipment, the best idea is try out a few different hockey sticks so that you find one that conforms to your style.

Hockey Equipment

Kevin Pierce
Hockey is one of the most popular contact games played in the US and other side of world, probably next only to soccer and rugby. There are more than a few versions of hockey played such as field, inline, rink and ice hockey. All use particular gear and equipment.

The basic apparatus of hockey is a stick, which may be about three feet long. Hockey sticks are round and generally made of wood sheltered with fiberglass; aluminum sticks are also used and both varieties feature suede and rubber grips. Field hockey sticks have hooked bases, which are rounded at one end and flat at the other to correctly smack the ball into the goal. Ice hockey and inline hockey sticks have broader bases and most are considered for right-handed players. Holding hockey stick the upper portion of the stick with your left hand and the lower portion with your right, the base curves forward, forming a shallow scoop for catching and guiding the puck.

In hockey uses a molded plastic ball and ice hockey, inline hockey use hard vulcanized rubber discs called pucks. Both hockey balls are sized according to hockey associations. The objective of any version of hockey is to guide the ball and puck towards the goal net. Goal nets are made of by steel frames and have durable synthetic nylon nets.

Protective equipment and team jerseys are just as important as the skates or footwear, the stick and the puck. Protective hockey equipment is composed of a chest protector, a helmet, large padded shorts, shin pads, a neck protector, and other gear. Make sure you use all protective equipment whenever you play hockey. Some pick-up games of hockey are not played with protective equipments, but safety should come first.

Hockey is a collision sport and injuries do happen. But with certified, quality, well-fitting gear, the frequency and severity of these injuries can be decreased.

Helmets and Facemasks

Mostly hockey injuries happen to the head and face. Lacerations (cuts) to the head and face, along with concussions, have been minimized by the mandatory wearing of helmets and face masks at most levels of play. In youth, high school, and college hockey, helmets and facemasks are mandatory.

When buying a helmet, make sure it fits snugly. Look for helmets with the seal of approval either from the HECC (Hockey Equipment Certification Council)

Gloves and Elbow Pads

Your gloves must give maximum protection without affecting your grip. The thumb, the palm, and the cuff of the wrist are regularly hit by opposing players' sticks. Buy gloves with maximum protection over the thumb. Make sure the palm of the glove is smooth, so you can feel the stick in your hand. The cuff of the glove should be elastic but still offer protection. And certain the laces of the gloves are always tied and in good condition, your elbow pads fit well and cover the sides and the back part of the elbow.

The Two Top Baseball Bats

Jack Johnson
Choosing a baseball bat that is right for you carries as much importance as the proper pitch selection and correct batting technique. Baseball bats are designed for players of all styles from the little league, college, high school, and the pros. Every league will have a different set of rules as far as how long the bat can be in the width of the barrel. With the amounts of bats available on the market today it can be more than overwhelming when trying to choose the correct bat. When you consider all the different styles brands and materials of bats it can be very hard to make a decision. Through the course of this article we hope to make the decision a little bit easier.

Baseball bats made by the Easton company commonly are very light weight, have a comfort grip on the handle, and have a double wall barrel. Easton baseball bats are made from the finest materials, and are on the cutting edge of technology. Some of these bats are enough to break your budget, but they also offer a line of far more reasonably priced bats that do not give up anything in the way of performance. Easton first came out with their metal bats in the late nineteen seventies, and have been one of the leaders in baseball bat innovation since then.

The Easton company has turned bat making into an art. Incorporating high tech metal alloys into their bats, and designing their bats with barrel speed in mind. Also their bats are double walled which makes the sweet spot on the bat much larger, and strengthens the barrel of the bat against cracking. These bats are designed with all styles of players in mind.

Demarini burst to the baseball bat industry in the late nineteen nineties. With lines of baseball bats that are innovative and do not break your budget, they have quickly earned a reputation of being a top baseball bat manufacturer.

Demarini is truly one of the leaders in innovation. They recently hit the market with a bat that has a flexible handle. This flexible handle has a recoiling action on it that allows a pointer with below average power to become a power hitter. They have taken their place of industry leader and there's no reason for them to ever look back.

Everything You Need To Know About Batting Cages

Scott Stevens
Every professional athlete who has ever been asked what they attribute their success too, has named someone who encouraged them to keep on practicing. About batting cages, it is said that use of a batting cage can improve your batting average. Where you live, as well as schedule conflicts can limit your accessibility to public batting cages.

The easiest, most effective way to help improve your batting, or that of your child, is to make it a game. People, especially children learn better when learning is fun. Keep score of your practice sessions. Use a three point scoring system, give line drives three points, grounders and low balls get two points, and fly balls get one point. Keeping track makes it easy to make it a game, and when you're trying to beat your own score, you're improving your own skill, and it can be a lot more fun.

If you don't have access to a batting cage, you can always build your own, right in your own backyard. You'll have access to it whenever you want. A good size batting cage is seventy feet in length, fourteen feet in width, and twelve feet in height. The height shouldn't be a problem for anyone, but if you don't have a big enough yard for the length or width, just modify them to suit your area.

The list of materials needed to build a batting cage are pretty simple, and easily located. The netting is most often composed of polyethylene or nylon. Nylon is most suited for indoors as it absorbs moisture and stretches. For the support poles you can use wood or aluminum. For poles on the top you can use PVC pipe. You may also need some cement.

Once you measure out where your batting cage will go, you will need to put your poles down at least three feet in the earth. This helps with the stability. These poles have to hold the weight of the netting, so it wouldn't hurt to pour cement around them once they're in the holes. Once your skeleton frame is up, simply attach the netting to the top and drape it over the sides. Make sure not to attach it too tightly or too loosely.

The last two things you need to make sure you didn't forget is an entranceway so you can get in and out of the batting cage. You also want to make sure that the balls can't get out from under the bottom of the netting. Your netting should come all the way to the ground.

Now place the pitching machine inside the netting, and you're ready to start practicing your batting. Remember to use the scoring techniques to make practice more fun, and more effective. Get out there and practice, practice, practice. Before you know it your RBI's, runs batted in, will increase and you will get on base more and get out less

Learning To Pitch A Softball

Annilee Kazushi
At present, there are a tremendous amount of different pitches involved in softball. First, softball pitching may involve a fastball, which actually goes straight. There is a changeup, which is often referred to as a backhand, horseshoe, or circle change in softball throwing. Also, there is a slowed down pitch. Now this type can take many diverse directions. Then there is the dropball, known as a peel drop. Then there are simply drops too. Softball pitching may involve curveballs, which are customarily referred to as curves, and there is a screwball, which curves inside and then drops a little. Finally, there are pitches that are basically a faster fastball, such as rise balls, or rises.

When you want to throw a fastball, the motion starts out as a windmill. In order to have the appropriate grips you have to grab the two horseshoes. Now, you can use as little as 2 fingers or as many as 4, but this usually depends on the size of the player's hand. Just remember that the more fingers you use, the more easily it will be able to be controlled.

In any softball pitching, in order to control balance, feet should never be a shoulder's width apart, but instead a little less. The front of the pitcher's body should be facing the catcher. The back heel rises putting the entire weight on the strong foot. A rocking motion is then performed by the pitcher's body, which then shifts the weight onto the back leg.

Your pitching arm will begin to move towards the catcher, but through and eventually reaching a twelve o'clock position. In order to keep accuracy and balance at the same time, the glove arm will actually point towards the catcher's mitt. When the ball comes back through the wind-up, it will be released around the hip level and provide a wrist snap at the same time. Without any action or snap at the release point, the rotation or spin will be minimal.

Changeups in softball pitching are a little different. Granted, the wind-up and the grip are the same, but your wrist action will vary. The idea is to release the ball before you reach waist level, and flip both the wrist and the forearm. Doing so will create a slowed movement which creates the changeup.

When it comes to a dropball, the fingertips are utilized a bit more. They have to be placed on the stitching of the horseshoe. It's also important to shorten your stride when approaching home plate. The finishing touch will be landing on your glove leg as opposed to your pitching leg. It will also be important to pull backwards with the tips of your fingers and shifting your weight forward at the same time. This creates the forward spin.

Then we have the curveball. The position of your fingers will be crucial to the success of this softball throwing pitch. The pinky and index fingers should be spread as far apart as possible. Your middle and ring fingers should be positioned properly on the laces. Most importantly the thumb will need to be set at a six o' clock setting underneath the ball. If you're a right hander you will roll the ball counterclockwise and lefties will send it through rolling the ball clockwise.

Major League Baseball Must Crack Down On Brawls

Vic Lamartinas
Following Tuesday night's bench clearing melee between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees, Major League Baseball handed down suspensions to the two foremost troublemakers - Jorge Posada and Jesse Carlson. For their role in Tuesday night's mle, Posada and Carlson each got four-game suspensions. Their suspensions had been scaled back to three games since neither Posada nor Carlson contested the suspension.

If someone might explain to me how the MLB came up with 4 games each, I'd really appreciate it.

When it comes to how many games a competitor gets for his misdealings, it is anyone's guess. It appears to me there are no set guidelines for penalties. That's a giant problem in my eyes.

Let's take a look at a couple of non-steroid related suspensions that have been given so far in 2009:

Does everyone else see what is ridiculous here? There is no rhyme or reason for any of the suspensions.

How did Youkilis and Porcello receive five games for inciting a bench-clearing brawl, although Posada and Carlson only received three games? What did Youkilis and Porcello do differently that their fight led to two more games?

In my belief, a bench-clearing fight is a bench-clearing brawl. They're similar to coincidences; there are no degrees.

How does Beckett get a 6-game penalty for throwing at someone's head, however Zambrano gets the same game penalty for roughing up a water cooler? I didn't know potentially ruining someone's career can be just as destructive as roughing up an inert object.

This is not a Red Sox-Yankee dilemma - this is a reasonable issue. I feel as if I am taking crazy pills even discussing something like this. If you do A, you are hit with B. It's as simple as that.

Major League Baseball - and I am talking about you Bob Watson - needs to come up a standard penalty for every infringement.

History Of The Arizona Diamondbacks

Drew Buchanan
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a professional baseball team out of Phoenix, Arizona. The team joined Major League Baseball in 1998 as an expansion team. They were one of two teams the join Major League Baseball that season. The other team was the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Diamondbacks joined the West Division as they came into the league. The other teams in the West division include the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants. These teams would be challenged by the Diamondbacks from the very beginning.

From their conception, the Diamondbacks were exceeding expectations. Usually it takes a team several years before having major success. For instance, the Devil Rays, the other expansion team mentioned, never found their way to the sort of success that the Diamondbacks had found early for about 10 years.

The Diamondbacks managed to win their division in just the 2nd year of their existence. They managed to win more than 100 games that season. Their season did not continue for long in the playoffs however. They lost to the New York Mets in the NLDS round of the playoffs. Despite not having success in the playoffs, things were definitely encouraging for the Diamondbacks.
The Diamondbacks made two of the greatest acquisitions in the history of baseball early on. The team managed to pick up the two best pitchers in all of baseball before the 2001 season. Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson led the pitching staff of the Arizona Diamondbacks. This duo made the Diamondbacks a very difficult team to face in the playoffs. These pitchers could pitch multiple games in each series. With such dominant pitchers, the Diamondbacks would be very difficult to defeat that year.

The Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS and the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. Each of these series took 5 games. With victories in these two series the Diamondbacks found themselves in the World Series against the New York Yankees. This presented the biggest David and Goliath stage that the World Series had ever seen.

The Yankees were the most successful and storied franchise in the history of Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks were in their 4th year of existence. This proved to be one of the most exciting series to ever be played. There was a lot of drama in the United States in that time. The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center had just taken place in New York. The state was rallying together in support of the Yankees. The hopes of the fans would not be enough.

Behind Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, the Diamondbacks were able to overcome the Yankees in 7 games. This made the Diamondbacks the quickest expansion team to ever win the World Series.

The team managed to win the NL West Division again in 2002, but did not have the same success in the playoffs. They were swept in the first round by the St. Louis Cardinals.

The team continues to be competitive year in and year out. They won another NL West Division title in 2007. They have not seen the same success in the playoffs since 2001 though. The team is still led by solid pitching today, but is not the dominant force that it was in 2001.

The History Of Boxing

Naldo Camarones
Boxing has become one of the most celebrated sports of our time. With big name matches being held in glamorous locations like Las Vegas, it attracts the interest of media world wide as well as the attention of boxing enthusiasts.

The history of boxing shows us that the sport is basically the same as when it was first introduced. Granted some of the aspects have evolved considerably since then. However, the basic premise remains largely the same.

To trace the history of boxing to its roots we need to go back to North Africa during 4000 BC. Another place that participated in boxing early on was the Mediterranean during 1500 BC.

The first documented evidence of boxing was in Greece in 900 BC, when a ruler found the practice of watching two men beat each other entertaining. The difference between this early form of boxing and the boxing we enjoy today is that the ruler, a man named Thesus, allowed the boxing match to continue until one of the opponents was killed.

The history of boxing also indicates a very big difference in the attire worn by the boxers during the beginning of the sport and the safety equipment required today. Early boxers wore nothing except for padding on their arms and a pair of unpadded gloves.

Boxing was one of the first Olympic sports. It was part of the competition at the 668 BC Olympic Games. The competitors wore clothing but instead of gloves their hands were covered with leather straps that were designed to protect them from injury.

Looking at the more recent history of boxing we see that in 1681 in London the first bare-knuckled prize fight was fought. Very similar to the early fights that occurred in Greece, this type of boxing didn't afford any type of protection for the participants.

As the name indicates they fought with their bare hands. Throwing punches directly to the body and the head of their opponents. This continued for many years and in 1743 the first set of documented rules were introduced. This was done mainly to prevent the deaths that had been occurring during the matches.

The rules stated that if a man fell and didn't get up after a period of 30 seconds the boxing match would be over. It was also during this period that boxing gloves with padding were introduced and required.

Reviewing the history of boxing shows that the sport rose in popularity and championships with prize money were soon formed. This eventually graduated into the introduction of amateur boxing which is what we see during the Olympic Games today.

In amateur boxing the focus is mainly on landing punches that will score you points. The competitors are not as concerned with landing a knock-out as professional boxers are.

Throughout the recent history of boxing many amateur boxers, after competing in the Olympic Games will progress to the world of professional boxing. With the prize money many times in the millions of dollars and the endorsement deals exceeding that, it's a lucrative career move.

Punching Bag Jabs

Dave Toub
The most important thing in boxing is to keep things fresh. If you notice that you are hitting the punching bag with the exact same combos every time, chances are your opponent will notice as well. If you act like a computer and exercise the same motions over and over again, your opponent will be able to drop you pretty quickly. Be unpredictable.

Although defining any type of combo will by definition no longer make it unpredictable, there are a few combos that can outline how to think in an unpredictable way. Lets look at the simple a jab. A single jab is usually followed by a cross or a hook; but why? Try mixing it up with a jab cross, then a jab jab cross, or maybe jab jab jab cross. As long as the jabs are quick and light, you can still maintain good defense. Think of how much those extra jabs will throw your opponent off his timing and his overall game. Quick jabs should make a pop sound on the punching bag, as opposed to a flat whack.

It’s not just the number of jabs that count- It’s the timing between them. Try throwing three jabs in a second, pause for another second, then throw one jab. Or maybe continuous jabs for a few seconds, followed by a pause, followed by a single jab and then a cross. The pause tells your opponent that you have tired out (even though you haven’t). The single jab makes your opponent think that you are going to repeat more jabs and the cross comes as a complete surprise. Use a stop clock or even a metronome next to the punching bag to test your speed and variation.

The final variation to the jab is the point of impact. Yes, the text book jab hits the same spot every time. That’s not very random though. That will not throw your opponent off their game. Take the text book jab and imagine that it is the center square in a 3 x 3 set of squares. The other 8 squares represent 8 other points of impact- landing the jab in a slightly different location can really throw your opponent of his game.

Pick a point on the punching bag and create the 9 tile square of all possible jabs around this central point. Practice various sets of jabs in each square, separated by 0.25,0.5,1,2 second intervals, finishing each set of jabs with a cross or a cross hook combo.

Improve Your Boxing Training By Using The Correct Boxing Equipment

Luis Paz
The sport of boxing can make you fitter physically as well as mentally. Not only can it make your reflexes even quicker but it also contributes in sharpening the mind. However, for all this, it is important to select the right boxing equipment and keep them in order as well.

Punch bags are one of the most important items in boxing equipment. These bags help in improving the stamina, building strength and refining the punching technique of professional as well as amateur boxers. You can find a wide range of these bags available in the market as per your requirements.

One of the kinds are speed boxing bags. These bags are useful for boxers, who are learning to keep their hands in the air. Filled with air, these bags are useful for increasing the speed of your punches.

However, if you have a decent punching speed but not the strength, then a heavy cylindrical bag is what you need. These bags are made of strong material and are used for punching hard blows.

In addition to these, you can also go for pedestrian and body shaped bags according to your needs. With these bags, you can build your stamina and improve your punching technique.

Whichever the kind of bag you go for, make sure that you choose a qualitative one. While training with inferior quality punching bags, you might harm your wrists badly. Therefore, while buying a bag, ensure that it is made of a good material.

In addition, it is always useful to consider the weight and swaying capacity of the punching bag you buy. The weight should be appropriate and good swaying capacity has to be present. However, too much swaying can also cause hindrance in your training. Hence, it is very important to balance things out while buying your punching bags.

Advantages Of A TKO Heavy Bag

Greg Handchild
TKO is one of the most well-known and most recognized brands of boxing equipment. One reason for their popularity is the TKO heavy bag, which gets you a well-built and durable product at a reasonable price. These bags hang, are available in different weights, and are constructed from a wide range of materials. A good box bag is key to getting a good boxing workout.

From the beginning TKO has been the innovator of boxing bags and they have been producing them for years. TKO was the first to offer a well-built heavy vinyl bag. What you get is a boxing bag what feels like leather, but without the added maintenance. Its durability is similar to leather; it will withstand harsh conditions, such as humid workout centers that don't have air conditioning.

For even more extreme conditions, TKO makes a heavy bag that is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. This heavy bag is constructed with an outer layer made of a waterproof material. It prevents water from getting into the bag and it can be used outdoors for many years without worrying about damaging the bag. This is a great solution for the person training at home but who does not have space for a heavy bag in the workout area.

TKO has leather and canvas bags available for commercial purposes and training for a competition. When you train on these bags, you usually have a specific purpose. With canvas bags, you are encouraged to punch right in the middle because it can hurt your hand (even with gloves) to simply graze the bag's side. A leather bag is not only ideal for boxing workouts, but training for street fighting and mixed martial arts too.

TKO heavy bags are always available in different weights. Their lighter bags tend to come in at around forty pounds and they are ideal for teenagers and small adults. The average adult can get away with a mid-weight bag that weights in at around sixty-five to seventy pounds; bags over one hundred pounds are available for extreme training.

TKO heavy bags come with a wide range of different fillers; this selection is to cater to their customer's different wants and needs. Popular bags are known as soft filled bags; the dense fibers absorb almost all impact. You will also find bags that are filled with sand and a very dense bag that is known as a hyrdrobag. These are bags that you feel with water; don't worry (I know what you are thinking), but they won't leak and will withstand years of abuse!

The choice of bag material is subjective. Sand filled bags are the classic but can feel more like punching a brick wall than sand at times. Water filled bags have become popular because they are denser than the fiber filled bags but absorb more of the impact; not to mention the fact that they are much less expensive to ship.

TKO is famous for their quality boxing bags as well as other boxing equipment. TKO heavy bags are no exception. The choices available are impressive and anyone can find the right TKO bag for them.

The Basics Of Learning Golf

Edwin Shackleford
Among all the ball games around, golf has been perceived as one of the most difficult. The reason being lies in the many talented and well-known sportsmen around which showcase talent like suggesting that the game leaves no room for novices and not-so-good but interested individuals.

Valid a reason as it may seem, the game in fact is not as difficult as one sees it and is as easy as 1, 2, 3. However, just like any other games available, understanding the rule of the game, the tactics by which you can earn that golf scores and all the significant terms associated with the game, you will surely hit the ball like a pro.

Gross Structure of a Golf Course

A real golf tournament is played on a golf course. A golf course is a land area that is designed primarily to take on all the activities related to golfing.

The land area where golf is played consists of several holes, usually from 9 to 18 holes, where the player has to put the hit ball into. The first player who gets to put the ball into these "holes" wins the game.

The golf is specifically engineered to have all of the following characteristic anatomical playing grounds:

1. A Tee 2. Greens, 3. Fairways, and 4. A number of hazards

There is no typical size for a golf environment for each golf course is designed to the management's own liking.

An 18-hole golf area ideally has about 140 acres which is translated to 57 hectares. The relative distances of tees are characteristically longer for men than for women (5,900 to 6,400 meters for men and 4,000 to 5,000 meters for women).

An area called a "green" is usually the area surrounding the final hole in the tournament. This area is proximal to the fairway where the grass is cut so low that they are played with less restriction.

Hazards may come in different forms such as trees, high cut grass area, and water which serves as a deterrent to getting the balls into holes.

Playing Golf

Golf is typically played in different ways depending on the players' agreed type.

In match play, one golfer or a team of golfers play in a tournament and compete with one another. The team who wins the most number of holes wins the competition.

Stroke play, on the other hand, is played differently where the player has to set the golf ball into the respective holes with fewer numbers of strokes. Fewer strokes before putting the ball into the hole means winning the game.

Golf Course Management

George Gabriel
Playing a good round of golf comes with a lot of good golf course management. Sure it is great to know how to have a great golf swing, but if you haven't got course management, then you haven't got a game plan.

Have you ever noticed a professional golfer standing beside their caddie in a discussion about the next golf shot at hand? You can rest assured that they were not talking about Larry King live, unless he was in the pro-am the day before and he was leading the tournament. They are discussing the previous results and golf placement on where they hit their golf shot the prior hole before in the practice round or regulation round. Course management is what they are talking about. Every golf shot is tagged to the nearest yard. If you want to play a good golf shot, you have to know your distance and what type of situation you're up against. This is where good golfers with a good course management excel over their competition.

Taking all the great golfers and great golf swings into consideration, without the proper knowledge about distance, wind, uphill, downhill and all the great earthly weather that is always a surprise at times can be quite demanding to the best golfer at times. If you think that all you need is a great golf swing and a great set of golf clubs, you should rethink your game again. A lot of great golfers fall prey to a golfer with better course management. These same golfers with good course management do not need to out distance their competitor. They just need to place their ball where the next golf shot is a walk in the park.

If you haven't got a clue about course management, your handicap is going to soar into the high double-digit figures. When you are talking about the shot at hand, you must take in consideration the prior distance and weather condition on your previous shot with the club selection at hand. Was the golf shot uphill with a wind behind you or against you? When choosing a golf club, one must ask a series of questions before making a formal decision. Do I want to play my next shot over a sand trap? Do I want to play my next golf shot with a pitching wedge or a 7 iron? In other words, do I want to fly the golf shot into the green, or place it where I can bump and run the next golf shot into the green?

Course management requires the golfer in paying attention to golf holes that are next to the hole that they are playing. They are constantly looking for good golf position for the next hole before they even tee up the golf ball. They are also checking out greens as far as slope and surrounding sand traps. Knowing where pin placement is, way before you're sitting out in the middle of the fairway will definitely help on club selection. You may decide to play less club, because of the simple fact of a two-tier green and the pin is sitting on the bottom level. You would never have that knowledge at hand if you did not eye the situation on the prior hole unless you played it once before. It is called course management.

Take a good look at the golf terrain and conditions that you are playing in and pay attention to golf holes that you walk by. Knowing the golf terrain well in advance will make it a lot easier on golf club selection and help drive confidence going forward

The History Of Lost Socks

Jerry Smith
Believe it or not there is a long history of socks and most especially for lost socks. There is actually a governmental agency that deals with lost socks. The Bureau of Lost Socks was begun on August 1st, 1861. It was originally a company the Union Army during the Civil War. Joseph Smithson was really good at Haberdashery but as a soldier - he did not do well. He was put in charge of the enlisted men as well as the officers and their socks. His skill for stocking and purchasing items were strong assets in this new position.

He tried to control costs and his unit was the most tightly run and honest unit. Major Smithson did not want to buy men new socks but rather he wanted to keep and maintain the ones the army already had. He ordered that said that soldiers were required each man in the north forces turn in a used sock before they are issued another one. This order was only in effect for a week.

Another general ordered that each soldier must turn in a pair of socks before getting replacements. He discovered that the men only lost one sock at a time. The only created field company that was only responsible for the darning, knitting, and issuing socks in the army that was trained to work behind the front lines. When Smithson couldn't get darning eggs, he created a Field Sock Darning kit.

This units purpose evolved over the years. In 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall the units purpose was questioned. In 1994 the bureau mission was changed to solving the mystery of missing socks. It became important to the US government as the State Departments and the Department of Defense.

Cycling Jerseys For All Cyclists

Fabian Toulouse
Cycling as a sport has been around for over a century. Almost as soon as bikes were invented, biking fans began challenging one another. The 1890's saw a sudden jump in the popularity of racing, and the era became known as the "Golden Age of Cycling." Huge events were held in the U.S. and Europe, and nearly all large cities had a velodrome for bike races. Everyone wanted a bicycle, and this newfangled means of transportation became a major form of recreation.

Today, cycling is still a huge sport as well as a means of transportation in many cities worldwide. Cycling races are popular, though comparatively not as followed in the U.S. as it is in other nations. The Tour de France, first held in 1903, however, has , over the past decade, captured the interest of Americans thanks largely to the success of champion cyclist Lance Armstrong.

One of the trademarks of cycling is the bright, streamlined cycling jersey worn by racers. Adopted by cycling fans everywhere, these jerseys are made of breathable fabric and hug the body, creating no wind resistance. The smooth silhouette accentuates cyclists' fit torsos.

There are hundreds of jersey fashions available to both recreational and professional cyclists. There are popular "old school" jerseys available from Adidas, Santini, and other companies, collegiate jerseys from all sorts of places, and jerseys representing popular racing teams from all over.

Though cycling jerseys were designed for racers, they are commonly seen on riders just out for a spin on a Saturday afternoon. The comfort these form fitting jerseys provide has established their popularity among riders of all types.

Batter Up At Fenway Park

Juble
There are a certain particular number of spots in the United States for the baseball fan to spend their sports oriented vacation getaway at. The popular ones seem to be those that actually have games played in that area. Basically, baseball fans want nothing more or less than to see their favorite teams play. One of these locales that actually have plenty of other attractions for the rest of the family is that of Boston Massachusetts, home of the famed Boston Red Sox.

The stadium of choice here is actually the home park of the Red Sox, Fenway Park. This great and massive open-air auditorium is a monument to the history of the great sport of Baseball, as it was the home field for some of the sports most popular legends. The greats have all played here and left their mark on the greatest American sport. The names that have been called here in the past are memorable ones, recognized by all sports fans, such as Cy Young, Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski, Harry Hooper, and none other than the famed Babe Ruth.

This particular version of the home field for the Boston Red Sox was constructed in the early 1900's. Unbeknownst to most, however, it was not the original home field for this legendary sports team. The first was in a park called the Huntington Avenue Grounds. This spot has long since been remodeled and is now being utilized by the Northeastern University College for campus grounds, but is still a great spot to visit for historical reasons.

There are two key times to visit this field. One is during a game, if for no other reason than to see the famed Boston Red Sox play, and the other is when there is no one playing. The reason for the second time is that when you step out onto this historical playing field, you are walking in the very same spots that the greats, such as the aforementioned Babe Ruth, have walked. Some people even bring a ball and a bat. What greater feeling could there be for the avid Red Sox fan than to stand at home plate while your partner is pitching and actually swinging away until you hit your first home run into the stands of Fenway Park. This would truly be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the sports buff.

Boston has a lot of things that are oriented towards the sports fan and activity oriented vacationer, such as sports museums with real Red Sox memorabilia, dining options with sports bars that are centered around the great sport of baseball, shops that sell baseball cards, autographs and Red Sox oriented clothing, and so much more. Boston is a city that takes an immense amount of pride in both their current Red Sox team members as well as those from eras past.

This year, why don't you allow that sports fiend that you keep tucked away most of the year some time out to play. Take a trip to Boston Massachusetts and see the Red Sox play and spend some time on the field your self.

Learn To Skydive Safely

Matt Anderson
POints to remember and take into consideration when you are learning to skydive

OK, let's think of the most fun you can do with a large piece of material. Tie it to your back and jump out of an airplane? That's not the first thing that comes to most people's minds, of course, but that's the basic idea behind skydiving. Of course, there has to be a lot more to it in order for it to be the safe sport that it has become. And safety steps are what make it safe. So be sure to follow the tips. -Be honest about your health. The first thing a skydiving school will want to know is if you are in physical condition to do it. You don't have to be a perfect physical specimen, but they will want to be assured that you are not going to have a condition that will impair you during the dive. They will ask you to sign a form that advises them of any conditions.

Having any kind of medical condition will not necessarily bar you from skydiving, but the school will want to be advised. If it is a serious condition, they may think it is inadvisable for you to dive, but perhaps it is something that they will just watch closely. If they are concerned, and you still want to dive, they may ask you to supply permission from a physician.

-Pay attention during the training. The instructor will be very thorough about what you should expect on your jump. The experience of landing on the ground on your back may not be a concept that you are comfortable with, but pay attention to your instructor about how to do the famous tuck and roll, and you will have no problem. If you don't understand what is going to happen when you land, you will be completely surprised and make react in an unsafe manner.

-Be prepared. Being prepared can be one of the most important aspects of success in a sport. Being prepared with the proper equipment can be one of the safest aspects of a sport. Check all of your equipment before every jump, whether you have done it a hundred times or not. Your goggles, jumpsuit and helmet need to be in good condition and fit you well. Small things, such as a loose zipper on a jumpsuit, can distract you and cause a problem during a freefall skydive. If you are distracted just at the moment you need to open your parachute or land, this can be very dangerous

THE SIX BIGGEST MISTAKES NOVICE TRAINERS MAKE

John Mailer
The mindset of a novice trainer is important as they tend to make a lot of mistakes in their way of approach during the training process. Following are the mistakes that are common among most trainers.

Expecting too much- True dog lovers usually expect too much and often make this mistake. This happens only when they watch the well trained dog or neighbor's dog doing some tricks like that of any sitcom characters. This also happens when they go to the park and see all the dog owners enjoying the company of their dogs that are obedient and well trained. At that moment, they tend to forget all the time and money that has been spent to train these dogs.

Giving Up- This is also a common mistake. Most of the time dog owners lose patience or concentration to achieve the result which they expect from their dogs. They expect their dog to play Frisbee in an hour or so and if at all their dog fails to start playing in that period then they conclude that their dog isn't going to learn at all.

Less Consistency- If you tell your dog not to jump on you when you are in your business suit and expect them to mind, don't let them jump on you when you are wearing your jogging clothes either. Consistent training is imperative if you want a well-trained dog.

Negative reinforcement- Trainer who spends his whole day during the training process will be looking for the dog to make a mistake, so that they can be corrected. This is a major mistake done by novice trainers because when you focus only in finding the mistakes of your dog, you will then fail to identify and reward all the good behaviors.

Different techniques- This is also another common mistake done by novice trainers. They use different techniques to train their pets. Seeking other trainer's experiences can be useless. By doing this, you and your pet will frustrated, as each trainer has different techniques to train their respective dogs. Perhaps, choose a best and easy method that works for you. Be consistent and you will see much better results from your dog.

Training Period- After certain period of training, most people assume that the training is over. Training is a learning process and there is no end to it. The dog can learn so many commands and behavioral lessons if you will be training them in a good manner. So why do you want to stop? Dog would love to learn more and more! So keep training.

knowing all these mistakes, you can now realize some of the common feelings that you might have found in yourself. So, solve the problem before it arises.

The Basics Of Sports Betting

Rob Pike
What could be more ingenious than combining two of man's greatest interests and you've got something called "sports gambling". Imagine a group of men cheering over their favorite team, and almost always, bets are placed along with the racket. Think about it. With every sport there are always certain highlighted games everyone's talking about; something that, according to sports buffs, will "Change the course of history." In order to get some of the action, spectators usually attempt to guess who will win in the upcoming games. This all turns into a friendly little "game" called sports gambling.

It might sound addictive but sports gambling is really just for fun and a way to bond with your friends. You can bet a little amount of money and still have a good time. Sports gambling makes the outcome of a game more meaningful and the whole duration of the game more thrilling and exciting. Here are some basics to get you started on sports gambling.

To place a bet, all you have to do is go to a sportsbook, which is a place that accepts sports bets. In the United States, there are four states where you can do sports gambling legally, but illegally, you can do it anywhere so long as you can find a bookie AND you are of legal age (over 21). Many of the sports you can bet on are professional and college football and basketball, professional baseball, professional hockey, and horse and dog racing. You can bet on anything that involves sports, really, after all, it is sports gambling. You can bet on the overall combined score of a game, on what round will the opponent be knocked out, and even whether a coin toss in a game lands heads or tails. All you have to do is place your bet depending on the statistical odds (chances of winning/losing).

In sports gambling, bookies rely on statistics to help you decide which team you think will win. There is such a thing called a "spread," which is a point advantage given to a weaker team that is expected to lose by X number of points. This is the odds maker's way of making even bets possible for a Sports Book. For example, if a person may bet on a team that is expected to lose, and still win the bet so long as the team loses by a given number of points.

You might be asked to bet a few notches higher than the money you may actually win. This is really just the bookie's way of making money.

In sports gambling, there are different kinds of bets. There are straight bets, parlays, teasers, and over/unders. In sports gambling the most common type of bet is the straight bet, where all you have to do is to pick the team which you think will lose or win. Over/under bets are wagers on the combined number of points scored in the game by both teams. Parlays are combined bets on several games. Teasers are similar to parlays, but you can add or subtract points from the spread to make your bets stronger. This is just to show you that sports gambling can be made more interesting and challenging by the bets that you place.

There you go - the basics of sports gambling. Why don't you give it a try, and have a lot of fun in the process. Just remember not to get too carried away and spend your entire 401K plan on a whim. You just might end up regretting it for life.

Skateboarding Is Awe Inspiring

Fabian Toulouse
Nosegrind, noseslide, 360, Ollie, kickflip-these all sound like factors the NTSB might blame for airplane crashes. In reality, these are some of the many tricks picked up by professional skateboarders in their quest for air. The more daring the trick, the more elevated the risk. Watching pros take to the skies it is hard not to imagine how much fun it must be to pitch yourself into the air, reconnecting with your board on the way back down.

It is a risky sport, but amateurs have more than their share of accidents. Of the 15,600 annual sojourns made to the ER by street skaters, about one third of the injured have been skateboarding less than a week. Many bone and skull fractures occur from rider error, but there are many fatal collisions with cars in the streets. To stay safe, you have to be watchful, and it is also a good plan to wear protective gear.

Well-padded helmets are needed, for obvious reasons. Protection for susceptible joints is helpful, too, especially for knees, elbows and wrists. Special shorts with padding can be found to protect hips. Street skating shoes that grip the board are also critical.

Besides equipment, you should understand that there are actually good and bad ways of falling. If you find yourself losing your balance, go into a crouch position-that way you fall from a shorter distance! Always try to land on softer body parts, as opposed to your knees, for instance. Finally, relax into the fall-try not going rigid, which causes more injury. If you think of it, roll with the fall; it lessens the impact.

There are lots of internet sites dedicated to teaching skateboarding techniques and fully equipping riders. In addition, there are incredible online stores where you can find all types of gear from every top name in skating. You can find skateboarding sneakers, wrist guards, board parts, cool clothing, and instructional videos. If you need it to skate, you can find it there!

Cricket Bats Evolved With The Sport

Sunil Jajodia
Cricket bats are an integral part of the great sport of cricket. Cricket has been around for hundreds of years and in that time span changes have occurred to the game and the equipment. It is said that the early bats were similar to hockey sticks, with a long shank and a shorter angled end. In fact, one of these early bats, said to be from 1729, exists and is on display in London. Since then the bats have evolved and modern style bats are not only shaped differently, there are more distinguishing features.

Modern cricket bats are paddle shaped, with a slim handle and a wider blade. The blade is flat on the front side and the back side has an aerodynamic v-shaped ridge. The ball is hit with the flat side of the bat. The cricket bat is usually made from willow wood because it is rugged and virtually splinter-proof while remaining fairly light. The bats are treated with linseed oil and this serves two purposes. It protects the willow wood and it also provides increased friction on the surface when it meets the ball and that helps the batsman’s control. Aluminum bats are not allowed in organized games because they can damage the cricket balls.

Bat size is regulated and can be up to 965 mm long and the blade up to 108 mm wide. While there is no restriction on weight, most weigh between 1.1 to 1.4 kg. Most bats today are machine-made, but there are some craftsmen who make cricket bats by hand. These are generally custom orders for professional players or for very serious amateurs who are seriously passionate about the sport.

New cricket bats should be seasoned a bit before they are used. This is called knocking-in and involves hitting the bat surface with a bat mallet or with a cricket ball. This action will compact the fibers inside the bat and should help prevent it from snapping or splintering during use. The product manual that comes with your bat will tell you to knock in your bat for three to six hours, and this is usually about eight thousand hits to the bat. However, some manufacturers offer pre-knocked cricket bats at a higher price. Your choice will depend on whether you want to save money or save time.

These specialised bats have come a long way since that early hockey stick look alike. As players realised the effect the bat material and shape had on their ability to hit the ball, they made changes and alterations until they created the modern cricket bat. Even today individuals are tweaking their bats, trying to get the best performance. Some have tried different materials like aluminum blades or lightweght carbon in the handle, but these usually get regulated against. International cricket officials pay close attention to any changes and work to preserve tradition in the sport. Their intent is not to stifle progress, but ensure that any changes in equipment are true to the sport and fair for all its participants.
