History Of The New York Knicks

Marilia Vieira
The New York Knicks are a professional basketball team playing in the National Basketball Association. The team has been in existence since 1946.

In 1946 the team began play in the Basketball Association of America. The team was one of the original teams in the league. The league eventually merged with the National Basketball League to start the National Basketball Association.

The Knicks have been one of America’s favorite teams for almost the entire existence of the team. New York is the biggest market available in the United States and the team draws a lot of money and attention regardless of the amount of success that the team achieves. The team has been in the dumps for years now, but they were once a successful, powerful team.

The late 60’s and early 70’s treated the New York Knicks very well. The team was led by star player Walt “Clyde” Frazier and coached by Red Holzman. The team had just been on a streak of not making the playoffs for the better part of 10 years when things were revived in 1968.

The team went on to become a solid contender for the championship each year for nearly a decade. The team really started to hit its stride in 1970. In 1970 the team put together a record 18 straight victories(the record is not still intact) and won 60 games. Those 60 wins represent the highest total of wins that the team has had in team history to this day.

As the playoffs came the team began to march through their Eastern Conference opponents. The team beat the Bullets and Bucks before facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the title.

The Lakers and Knicks started out the series tied 2-2. Game 5 would be crucial in deciding the outcome of the series. Unfortunately for the Knicks, Willis Reed was injured and could not play the rest of the game. Despite the loss of Reed the team went on to take a come from behind victory in game 5. The team could not close out the series in game 6 without Reed and the series would be stretched to the limit of 7 games. The 7th game held one of the classic moments in NBA history. Willis Reed had been injured and was not expected to play. Against all odds Reed came limping to the sideline and onto the court, ready to play in the game. He did not play one of his best games, but did score the first 2 buckets of the game. That was inspiring enough to get the team motivated to take the championship in 1970.

That victory marked the first NBA Championship for the New York Knicks. In 1973 the team was able to bring home another NBA Championship to New York. This was the capstone of the run that the Knicks made in the 70’s. These two championships would help the team be remembered as one of the greatest teams in the early 70s.

The Knicks have never been the same since those glory days. They have managed to make NBA Finals and to win games in the playoffs, but they have not been able to bring home a championship for nearly 40 years.

Dallas Cowboy New Stadium

Geoffrey Wooldridge
Dallas Cowboys stadium is the largest domed venue of its kind in the world. Built in Arlington Texas, Dallas Cowboys stadium was designed to replace the former stadium used by the Cowboys since the early days of the team. Intended to house the new NFL season for the team, the Dallas Cowboys stadium had the official opening on May 29th, 2009. The architectural elements present in the former building are imitated in the appearance of the new venue as a form of homage or tribute paid to the team's history. The new Dallas Cowboys stadium serves for non-sports events too, such as concerts, shows and other cultural manifestations.

The Dallas Cowboys Stadium was built for impressive sums of money. Lots of taxes were in fact increased in Arlington as a form of financial support for the construction. Car rental, hotel occupancy and city's sales taxes were increased with one or two percents for the only purpose of funding the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The National Football League also had a share in the contribution according to the policy that allows financing team stadiums. Lots of nicknames have been given by fans to the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium but most of them are very little known.

As for design and architecture, it seems that the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium is beyond any criticism. Massive arches anchor the stadium at each end, the retractable roof makes events possible no matter the weather and the glass doors allow easy access at each end zone. There is a high-definition video display hung right in the middle of the stadium which enables for a nearly perfect visibility. Even the new scoreboard is highly larger. With 3,000 square feet bigger than the former scoreboard, Dallas Cowboys Stadium scoreboard now measures 11,520 square feet.

The Dallas Cowboys Stadium also includes a Hall of Fame level dedicated to the best American football team. Even if you are not a Cowboys' fan you'll still be impressed by the huge number of real life drawings and the quality of the design.

The 2011 Super Bowl will be housed by this facility, but until then, the Dallas Cowboys Stadium is expected to be used on very numerous occasions, for a wide range of activities. From cultural shows to the music concerts and exhibitions, the new Arlington venue has a lot of things to offer.

Browns Keeping Starting QB Under Wraps

Ross Everett
Most NFL head coaches place a priority on naming a starting QB before the regular season begins. The idea is that it helps the chemistry on the team, as well as helping the quarterback define himself as a team leader. Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini hasn't named his starting QB yet. Nor will he, at least not publicly. Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson will find out if they're the starting QB in the next couple of days, but the coach won't divulge that information to the public until game day.

Mangini stressed that he'd already made his choice, and that hell meet with both Quinn and Anderson individually to inform them of his decision:

"In terms of announcing it publicly, that's not something I plan to do. It will be internal. I understand everybody has a different opinion on it. I respect that. I understand the excitement in relationship to that and I respect that as well. But that will be something that will be internal."

As of Sunday, both quarterbacks were still in the dark and not saying much. Derek Anderson said he didn't have a clue:

"I know as much as you guys know.

While Quinn suggested that it wasn't a big concern for him:

"I'm not worried about it. You guys are more worried about it than I am."

Mangini may be trying to gain a strategic advantage over the Browns opponents in the opening week of the NFL regular season:

"It is more difficult to plan for two quarterbacks than it is to plan for one. I'm not saying that's going to be the difference or not the difference, but I know that there is time allotted to that and you can't put the same amount of time into focusing on one player."

Vikings coach Brad Childress said that it really didn't make a difference in how he'd approach his preparation for the contest:

"Just schematically, you're going to go back and look at tape and see what you've seen. And then I know, as do our guys, that there will be unscouted looks. They certainly haven't showed their whole hand, offensively and defensively. So you're just going back and looking at formation-wise where they're putting people and what kind of players they are. It will be more about us deploying to what they do."

The Browns coach concluded his comments by emphasizing that regardless of who is eventually named the starting QB that he's happy with the play of both:

"I have been happy with the progress that both guys made. I'm happy with the way they've worked. I'm happy with the way they approached this competition, and it's not always easy to approach a competition in a team fashion, and I respect the way they've handled it."

After hosting the Vikings in their opening game of the 2009 NFL regular season, Cleveland will play their next two games on the road. They'll head to Denver for a game against the Broncos on September 20th and then play another away game in week 3, taking on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, September 27.

Raiders Rip Cowboys In NFL Preseason Action

Ross Everett
The Dallas Cowboys received a solid effort from QB Tony Romo in his first action of the NFL preseason, but ultimately went down in defeat to the host Oakland Raiders by a 31-10 final score. Romo went three and out in his first series, but orchestrated a nice drive on his second go-round culminating in an eight yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten.

Romo did receive some criticism for hooking up with his longtime favorite target Witten rather than involve the rest of the offense. There's been a lot of concern about the need to develop more long yardage passing threats after the departure of Terrell Owens. After the game, he brushed aside this talk:

"I don't think it means anything. If one guy caught six straight balls and then we scored, that's fine, too. It's just about whatever the defense allows us on that specific play."

Receiver Roy Williams caught one pass on the evening, and gave his vote of confidence on the Cowboys offense:

"If we execute like that, any team is going to have trouble. But we're going to have our adversity and have our hard times where we can't get open or the quarterback gets sacked or a bad throw. But tonight it all fell into place."

Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell didn't do much in only two series of action, but Oakland coach Bruce Cable still gave him props for a good effort:

"I thought he was very aggressive with the ball, made good decisions. That's what I'm talking about with him. When he plays the game at a fast enough speed, it allows him to be on time and he showed that tonight."

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips chalked the loss up to a learning experience:

"Our second group and our young guys, they made a lot of mistakes. You could see them out there. Those things shouldn't happen but they did. Our guys will learn from those things."

The Cowboys will continue their NFL preseason play hosting the Tennessee Titans on Friday night. Oakland, meanwhile travel across the bay to play their local rivals the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.

CFL Best Alouettes Rough Up Blue Bombers

Ross Everett
The Montreal Alouettes demonstrated the form that has made them the CFLs top team in a Saturday visit to Winnipeg. Anthony Calvillo threw four touchdown passes and the tenacious Montreal defense all but shut down the Winnipeg offense as the Alouettes prevailed easily over the Blue Bombers by a 39-12 score.

CFL bettors who backed Montreal cashed their tickets as the Als easily covered as -8 road favorites. Montreal improved to 5-2 against the number while the Blue Bombers slipped to 4-3 against the spread. Interestingly, this was the first time all season that Winnipeg failed to cover as an underdog, having earned the money in four such roles this season before tonights setback.

Calvillo not only through four TD passes, he through three consecutive passes for touchdowns which is a feat that he can't recall accomplishing before:

"Somebody mentioned that to me out there. I didn't realize that and they asked me if it's ever been done or if I'd done it before and I can't recall."

After the game, Calvillo gave all of the credit for the victory to the defense and insisted that his team had a lot of work to do:

"Our defence put us on the short field throughout the night and we capitalized on the turnovers. We have a lot of work to do. We had a few dropped passes, a few misreads by myself and two turnovers. We're always looking to improve and we definitely have to improve on offence."

Kerry Watkins caught one of Calvillos touchdowns and spoke of playing with the CFL legend in his postgame interview:

"It's a great accomplishment, but something we don't keep track of. It's an honour. That's a living legend. I've been so fortunate to play my whole (six-year) career with him."

Bombers head coach Mike Kelly, who also serves as the teams offensive coordinator, chafed when asked if it was time to revamp the offense:

"There's nothing wrong with this scheme. I've seen this scheme work 1,000 times .If you want to get right down to it, we have to block when we need to block and catch when we need to catch and throw to the right people. And right now we're not doing those things so we'll continue to look at it."

Winnipeg defensive tackle Doug Brown agreed with his coachs assessment:

"Let's put it this way, we were in a good enough dogfight without as many critical errors as we made ourselves. You play a team of this calibre, the last thing you need to do is dig yourself your own hole with penalties and turnovers and missed tackles and not executing our assignments and so on and so forth."
